What no one tells you about the first year as a single mother

    By Shilpa Prasad · May 1, 2026 · 6 min read

A woman looking out toward soft evening light

No one warns you about the silence. Not the loneliness, the silence. The pause between putting your child to bed and finally sitting down with the weight of the day. That pause is where the rebuilding begins.

    The logistics will surprise you

Permission slips, dental appointments, the school's WhatsApp group, the leaking tap, the tax return, all of it lands on one set of shoulders. The mental load is real, and it has a name now. Naming it helps. Systems help more.

Grief shows up in strange shapes

It is not always tears. Sometimes it is irritation at small things. Sometimes it is a sudden tenderness for a stranger. Let it move through you. It is not a setback, it is part of how you metabolise a life that did not turn out the way you planned.

You are not behind. You are becoming.

    Build your circle on purpose

The friends who stay are not always the ones you expected. Be deliberate. Find one or two women who get it, who don't flinch when you tell the truth. That circle will carry you on the days you cannot carry yourself.

If you are in your first year, I want you to know: the version of you waiting on the other side of this is steadier, softer, and more yours than you can imagine right now. Keep going.
